Benefits of Bone Broth and How to Prepare it at Home

We have all had the experience of having bone broth during our childhood days when we were down with fever. This is one of those classic foods that are known for their health benefits as well as great taste. While many of us are acutely aware of the health benefits of bone broth, there are also many people who are not really aware of them, even though they love having this preparation as and when they can. Here we will have a look at some of the benefits of bone broth and then discuss the ways to prepare it at home.
Benefits of having bone broth

  •  Bone broth contains large deposits of collagen that help in repairing skin and hair health, and in mitigating and preventing signs of aging;
  • It contains chondroitin sulfate which helps to prevent osteoarthritis. The glucosamine present in the broth also helps in minimizing joint pain;
  • Bone broth helps to improve sleeping and promote good health;
  • The higher concentration of minerals in bone broth makes it ideal for strengthening the immune system.

Preparing bone broth
There are some important things that you need to keep in mind while preparing bone broth.
  • Although you can easily opt for a bone broth recipe that only makes use of animal parts, it has been found that combining the animal parts with vegetables enhances the beneficial properties of the broth.
  • The animal parts that are ideal for being used in a broth preparation are the neck and feet.
  • Make sure that all the body parts are collected from pasture-fed animals and that no hormones or antibiotics have been used on them.
  • To make bone broth, the items that you will essentially need include meat, fat, bones, vegetables and water. If you are using lamb or beef for your broth, make sure that you brown the meat prior to using them for your actual broth preparation. If you are using poultry animals or fish, then you can directly use them for the broth instead of browning them first.
  • Make use of apple cider vinegar for drawing the various minerals from bones.
Bone broth cooking method
  • Put the bones in a large pot and then cover them with a quality water;
  • Prior to cooking, add some apple cider vinegar to draw out essential nutrients from the animal bones;
  • Now fill the pot with clean filtered water and leave enough space for boiling;
  • Heat the water slowly; bring the water just to boiling and then reduce the heat to simmer slowly for about 6 hours. Gently remove the scum as it is produced;
  • Cook the whole broth at low heat. If you are using chicken bones, they can be cooked for 24 hours. The beef bones, on the other hand, can be cooked for 48 hours. Such long hours of cooking are necessary for fully extracting the nutrients from all parts of the bones.
  • To add to the nutrient value of the broth, you can also add various vegetables like garlic, onions, carrots and celery.
