How a Bone Broth Diet Can Help Erase Wrinkles

Spoiler alert: Many diets can actually wreck your skin. When you restrict your body from certain nutrients, these diets pull water, healthy fats, and other nutrients out of your skin, weakening and aging these cells. But a healthy diet of organic bone broth may just be the answer to helping you lose weight, and wrinkles, all at the same time.

Think of your skin cells as healthy, bouncy soccer balls. As you age, they start to lose their bounce and get tired and flabby. (Picture rows and rows of soccer balls slowly deflating.) As a result, your skin matrix becomes weak, rapidly accelerating the formation of wrinkles. At the same time, if you're eating a diet high in inflammatory grains and sugar and deficient in healthy fats and other key nutrients, your skin gets dry, flaky, rough, and sick—and dry, sick skin wrinkles quickly and deeply.

Bone broth, apart from being delicious and chock full of nutrients, helps mainline the building blocks of collagen straight to the cells, "re-inflating" them. The collagen in the soup's bones helps build strong and resilient skin cell walls with healthy fats, essentially reversing inflammation with anti-inflammatory foods. Plus, it means loading your body with nutrients that protect against photo-aging (for instance, the potent anthocyanin in berries).

But the true key to weight loss and younger-looking skin is the combination of collagen and gelatin. Collagen is an integral part of bone, containing a large supply of amino acids. When you cook bone broth for a long time, the collagen in the bones turns into gelatin. Here's what that gelatin does for you:

. Gelatin strengthens your skin.
There's a reason women have used gelatin for centuries to help keep their skin smooth. The nutrients in gelatin provide you with key building blocks of collagen—and collagen is like natural Botox, erasing wrinkles and reversing sagging and stretch marks. Hey there, liquid gold!

2. Gelatin fights inflammation.
Research shows that even basic chicken soup helps quell inflammation by preventing pro-inflammatory immune cells called neutrophils from moving to an inflamed area. The glycine from the gelatin in bone broth—an amino acid that detoxifies the liver, reduces oxidative damage, enhances insulin sensitivity, and helps you sleep well—is even more powerful, inhibiting both local and systemic inflammation. And remember this: Less inflammation equals faster weight loss. Lowering inflammation also reduces symptoms of autoimmune disorders, which is why patients with arthritis, celiac disease, and psoriasis swear by the healing powers of bone broth.

3. Your levels of human growth hormone (HGH) surge.
During a 24-hour mini-fast, the human growth hormone (HGH) increases an average of 1,300 percent in women and nearly 2,000 percent in men. This hormone helps you burn fat faster and sculpts lean muscle. It also promotes healthy skin, thus reducing wrinkles.

4. It's a natural Botox.
Did you ever notice that as you "mature" (or as I like to say, "evolve"), your skin gets thinner and less elastic? The protein, healthy fat, minerals, and collagen components in bone broth make your skin smooth and give it a beautiful fullness, much in the same way that fillers do. In short, fillers and Botox are not your only way to tackle physical imperfections. The nutrients in bone broth can replenish your body's own collagen. Here's what Botox doesn't treat: The wrinkles caused by loss of collagen in your skin over time. Botox focuses on freezing the muscles of problem areas, but it does nothing to replenish the collagen that makes your skin look so smooth and young and bouncy. Bottom line: The only permanent way to plump your skin and make it firmer is to replenish your body's own collagen. And a key "medicine" for that is bone broth.
